Australian Day
The
Australian Day is the oficial national day of Australia. Celebrated annualy on
the 26th of January.
This day
marks the arrival of the first fleet of British ships at Port Jackson, and the
rising of the flag of Great Britain by governor Arthur Phillip. The fleet
established a colony at Botany Bay. On 26 January Phillip took posession of the
land in the name of King George III. Beacause of this the celebration of this
day is accompanied by an Aboriginal day of mourning, marking the defeat and the
loss of the Indigenous culture. But not all the Australian get sad this day,
they also celebrate it and make concerts, community barbecues and sports
competitions.
Some
people call this day Invasion Day and others call it Australian day. But they would
both recognise this day as an important date in Australian history.
